How to document hoof-water contact

Best photo has the waterline, hoof position, and some dry ground in the same frame. Boring, wide, slightly ugly pictures beat cinematic zooms almost every time.

A close crop of the animal is fine as a second image. As the only image it turns into twenty posts of people arguing whether the dark part is shadow, mud, water, or compression doing crimes.

A fence post in the frame is not ugly. It is scale. Same with a dock, bucket, gate, or shoreline grass. Beauty is how we lose measurements.

If the waterline is hidden by grass, say that. Don't make us discover it after six replies and a zoom crop autopsy.
