Lurker with a ditch photo before everyone yells at me

Long time lurker, first time posting. I read the sticky twice and also the thread where everyone yelled about fence-post scale until somebody posted a ruler, so please do not murder me immediately.

Not a case submission. I have one wide photo of a cow standing in a drainage ditch after rain. Water around both front hooves. I cannot tell if she walked in or if the ditch filled around her while she was busy being a cow.

Do I post photo here for triage or use the report form and let mods reject it in the official little machine?

If the answer is ordinary wet ditch cow, fine. I would rather be boring in public than make the archive worse in private.

Post it here first if you are unsure. Use the report form if you have a time, a location type, and a return path. Nobody sane is going to yell at a wide shot with uncertainty in the first sentence. insane members may vary.

Ditch after rain usually means context file, not case file. But you already did the important part by not cropping out the ditch, which puts you ahead of the guy from last week.

You used the word 'ditch' in the first post and did not call it proof, which means you are already posting better than several veterans. Low bar but still.

one thread would have been enough

Photo is up in attachment review. I blacked out the road sign and left the fence post because the sticky yelled at me in advance.

Good redaction. Fence post helps. Waterline is visible but shallow. I'd keep it here and let people ask boring questions before feeding it to the form.

The left bank looks like it filled fast. Any rain time? I know that sounds boring but boring is doing work here.

Rain started around 1 AM, photo around 3:20. Cow was already there when I looked out. I did not see entry path, sadly.

That missing entry path is exactly why people yell at crops. Still, timestamp + rain window + wide shot is more than we get from half the inbox. Keep going.

For a first post this is annoyingly responsible. I was promised chaos and got a useful ditch.

Ditch cow with unknown entry is exactly why thread triage exists. It is neither trash nor triumph. It is a damp question.

Can you see where it exited? If the water was an accidental standing spot, exit may be random. If it used the ditch, exit matters.

where it went after matters

Exit was same side, about twenty yards down, back to grass. Not dramatic. She stopped to eat immediately, which felt rude.

Rude grazing after a strange water event is basically the house style around here.

Tag stays discussion. No case number yet. OP did the right thing by asking first instead of kicking the archive door open with a blurry ditch cow.

Thanks all. I came in expecting to get chewed up and instead learned my cow is probably just a competent ditch user. I hate that this is now a phrase I understand.

It's a ditch. Sometimes a ditch is a ditch. Do we need fifteen posts for a ditch now.

asking questions is illegal now I guess

We needed fifteen posts because OP answered questions instead of yelling at us, which is basically a holiday.

I am weirdly proud my ditch got a small holiday. Also I found one more photo but it's mostly my thumb and shame, uploading anyway.

for future lurkers finding this thread: this is what a useful non-case looks like.

op posted wide first, admitted what they did not know, gave rain timing, kept the fence post for scale, removed the road sign, and answered the exit-path question without getting defensive. that lets the board say 'not enough for case file' without treating the whole thing like garbage.

most rejected submissions are not bad because the cow was ordinary. they're bad because the poster turns an ordinary uncertainty into a dramatic claim. this thread did the opposite. it preserved a small, boring, maybe-useful edge event and did not demand applause from it.

that is the whole point of having a forum instead of only a form, imo.
