Recommended observation distance?

For safety and animal welfare, I have been using the rule that documentation ends where approach begins.

If I have to move toward the animal to keep documenting, I stop documenting. If I have to step into water, I stop. If a fence is involved, I am done.

Does anyone have a more formal distance recommendation, or is 'do not become part of the report' as close as we get?

water first. story second.

'Do not become part of the report' should go on the form. It is plain English and somehow still kinder than the legal paragraph.

measure twice, post once

My rule is: if the animal changes behavior because of me, I am too close. Not scientific, just learned it after being stupid once.

flat water carries too much
